Do you have a dog that routinely has tummy troubles? If my girl gets a single table scrap or if we change her food, she’ll wretch, get irritable bowls or constipation or we even have the occasional throw up to clean up. Either way, it’s not fun for us or especially her.

That’s where BRAT diet recipes for dogs come in! They can be a lifesaver for soothing dog’s tummy trouble.

Of course, our pets are our children and we strive to do our best to prevent them from getting stray bits of food and treats they shouldn’t but since it can’t always be prevented we’ve been looking for a good solution to this problem. Hopefully, the recipe we got from our vet will help you as it has helped our Tillie.

How Can I Help My Dog With Upset Stomach? Dog BRAT Diet Alternatives.

For Tillie we normally are strict about what she eats. But sometimes no matter how strict we are she ends up getting into things that give her a yucky tummy.

In addition to this recipe what works for some dogs is a spoonful of plain, unsweetened yogurt with their regular food. As a probiotic, it can really help.

Another thing that works is Pepto-Bismol. You should only use it in the very short term – no more than one or two days – and the dose is 1/4 tablet every 6 to 8 hours. (You should inquire with your veterinarian if your furbaby is on any meds before using this method as Pepto can interfere with some medications).

Soothe Your Dog’s Tummy Trouble with this Vet Approved Recipe

This is a simple recipe that’s meant to calm down an icky stomach. Consider it the Puppy version of the BRAT diet. (You know… bananas, rice, applesauce, toast)

Sometimes people ask me is there a BRAT diet for dogs, and yes. It just contains slightly different ingredients.

This particular BRAT diet is safe for puppies as well as full grown dogs. It also works well for dogs with diarrhea.

Important! If your dog has diarrhea that lasts for more than a day or so make sure you take them to see your vet. It can be the sign of a bigger problem.

I got this recipe from our vet, so you know it’s a tried and true one. If your Sweet Little Furball gets an upset tummy, try this. It really works for our Tillie so I am happy to share it with our readers.

Hand sliding cooked chicken off of a knife onto a plate with rice

Vet approved Pumpkin, Chicken and Rice dinner – The BRAT Diet Recipe for Dogs

Ingredients:

  • chicken
  • white rice
  • 100% canned pumpkin (not pie filling)
  • plain yogurt (non-fat with live cultures)

Instructions:

  1. Boil the chicken.  It can be legs, thighs, or breasts.  You can boil it in water or even bone broth for an extra nutritional kick.  Once it’s cooked completely through let it cool, then shred it. (I love using my food processor for this too and no need to let it cool off first!)
  2. While your chicken cooks, you can make your rice.  I like using instant rice but if you want to use regular rice you can cook it on the stovetop per the pkg instructions. I use my microwave when I’m in a real pinch…just measure the water to the bottom of your first pointer finger joint (after you rinse your rice out until it runs clear) or you can use broth or bone broth instead of water and then place in your microwave and cook on high in 5-minute intervals stirring to mix it each time until it is cooked through. Let stand and cool.
  3. Combine one cup chicken meat to 2 cups rice.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt, and ¼ can of pumpkin puree.
  5. According to my vet, 1 cup of this mixture replaces a ½ cup feeding of dry kibble.

Your dog may eat a bit more or less, based on how they’re feeling and how much you normally feed them.

As your dog starts to feel better, you can wean them off the yogurt, then the pumpkin.  Then begin introducing their usual food back until you can wean them off the BRAT mix completely and back onto their regular kibble.

For a normal upset stomach, this process can take one to two weeks. If it’s more serious, please get specific instructions from your vet.  Something more serious could be going on and you may need their help.

So, now you know one way to soothe doggie tummy trouble…I swear by this recipe for our fur baby. I hope it will help your furbabies too.
